The strangest thing happened last night at the Holland Patent Junior Prom… I was behind the DJ booth, mixing dinner songs together for the Class of 2014 when it hit me… Just about this time 20 years ago I was a tall, skinny kid from the Holland Patent area, attending my Junior Prom. 20 YEARS I thought to myself… Wow! I couldn’t dance, I couldn’t sing and I was lucky I found a tux that fit (some things are still the same in 2013!).

Fast forward 20 years and I could see some of the same qualities and fears I had in some of the attendees of the 2013 Holland Patent Junior Prom. 139 students attended this years event, held at Daniele’s Banquet Specialists in New Hartford.  The night was built around a Hollywood theme and featured a red carpet, photo backdrop and statues for those named to the Prom Court.

The students started arriving around 7pm and were greeted to a mix of some popular new music and alternative rock songs that you can’t really dance to but are trendy enough to play (artists like Imagine Dragons, Passion Pit, Of Monsters and Men, DJ Earworm, Cee-Lo Green, Justin Timberlake, Ariana Grande and MKTO to name a few).

Dinner was served station style with a pasta station, carving station and salad station. We played a mix of songs from artists like Taylor Swift, Phillip Phillips, the Band Perry and the most popular dinner song of the night: Bohemian Rhapsody from Queen.  Cupcakes were displayed for dessert. The main focus of the evening however was on one thing: dancing!

We opened the party with Pitbull’s “Don’t Stop The Party” and the party went from there.  Dance floor favorites included “Thrift Shop”, “I Love It” by Icona Pop, “Wobble”, “Can’t Hold Us” and the “Harlem Shake” to name a few.

I first met Kim when I started working at 97.9/105.5 KISS-FM in the early 2000′s. She would call in for requests, come by events and grew into one of my biggest fans. Eventually she would go to school for broadcast and communications and end up working in radio as well. That is where she met Rich, the man behind the 80′s Saturday night amongst other shows on the Utica airwaves.

After seven years of dating and just about two and a half years of wedding planning, Promo Productions Entertainment was honored to be asked to be part of their special day.

The reception was held at the Masonic Hall, a beautiful facility in downtown Utica.  I had walked and driven by the building for years but never knew how nice it was or that a reception could be held in there.  Kim and Rich designed the centerpieces, built around their theme “Two Love Birds”.  Gina Labella and the ladies from CNY Party Planner provided the chair covers.

After a delicious lunch, with some of the biggest meatballs I have ever seen, Kim and Rich took to the dance floor for their first dance, “Just A Kiss” by Lady Antebellum.  At the conclusion of the formal dances, Kim and Rich wanted to do the Anniversary Dance. We invited all the married couple to the dance floor and recognized three couples who had been married 50 years or more! It was amazing to see over 150 years of love on the floor.

The rest of the afternoon was spent dancing, eating delicious desserts and partying with Kim and Rich. The dance floor was busy right to the end. I always have a fear of how an afternoon wedding will go but I told the bride and groom that with the right people and right music you can always have a fun party.  The  ingrediants were perfect for this occasion.

What did Kim and Rich have to say about our performance?:  “Kenny made the reception go seamlessly and we didn’t have to worry about a thing the entire time. It proves you can have just as much fun at an afternoon wedding as an evening wedding He kept everything on time and moving along and played a great selection of music!”

Promo Productions Entertainment officially started the 2013 wedding season with a great reception for Kristina and Rocco in the lobby of Hotel Utica.  You may think to yourself, the lobby???  Yes, the lobby area was beautifully transformed, along the mezzanine, for this special celebration.

Kristina comes from a Lebanese background and her culture was used as part of the celebration during the night.  Cocktail hour, held in the Lamplighter Lounge, featured a variety of Lebanese appetizers.  After cocktail hour, Kristina and Rocco (along with their wedding party) made their grand entrance down the marble staircase located in the middle of the hotel to Arabic music complete with a live, custom drum beat.

Once the formal dances were complete the Maid of Honor Nadine Karrat and Best Man Joe Dare gave two awesome toasts to the bride and groom. After dinner it was all about the dancing as this party featured several Dabke’s amongst other ethnic songs mixed in with some of today’s fun party tunes.   As the last song played the party wound down with everyone watching the end of the Syracuse game in the lounge.
