First 2010 Wedding: Rick & Julie Swift

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

After taking New Years Day off, Promo Productions was back at it on January 2nd to DJ the wedding of Rick and Julie Swift at Francesca’s Banquet Hall in Ilion, NY.

Francesca’s is a beautiful catering hall that opening in March 2009.  I first visited Francesca’s at the Day For Diva’s Bridal show, which is where I met many brides including Julie.

Julie looked absolutely stunning and Rick was as smooth as can be.  They told me they dated for a long time and decided to have a wedding reception for family members and close friends.   Some music highlights include:

Cocktail/Dinner Music: Mobs Hits
First Dance: Wild Horses (Rolling Stones)
Father/Daughter Dance: I Loved Her First
Mother/Son Dance: That’s Amore

The reception went from 8-midnight. After a full cocktail hour, introductions, dances, toasts, blessing and cake cutting it was almost 9:30pm. Francesca, Jennifer and the entire banquet staff made sure everyone received their salad and dinner in a timely fashion (I had a filet that melted in my mouth).  The food was outstanding!

Mother nature may have brought cold temperatures and plenty of snow but that wasn’t going to stop Julie and Rick from creating memories of their wedding day!

I wish Julie and Rick nothing but the best!  DJ Kenny The Promo Guy

New York Mills F.D. Installation Banquet

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

Well things are back into full swing for 2009. After enjoying a weekend off for gigging, it was off to Twin Ponds in New York Mills for their annual fire department installation banquet.

Close to 120 people attended the 5 hour event including many politicans and local community figures.   After a social hour, fabulous dinner, and some awards, it was time to party and dance.   This was a different crowd than years past as many left after they ate dinner and had dessert.  We still hit them with some party tunes and plenty of requests.

The night did have the resurrection of one of favorite unofficial rules:  “If you request it, dance to it”.   It is amazing how many times someone will ask to have a song played, saying they will dance to it, or their friends/spouse will dance to it, only to have them not come out to the dance floor.  I just laugh and go about my business of DJ-ing, but it is funny how often the old unofficial rule comes into play.

With over 700 calls per year, it amazes me how many guys made it to 200, 300 or even 500 fire calls per year.  All I can say is thank you for what you do!

Westmoreland Teachers Holiday Party

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

What a way to wrap up the weekend: a post holiday party with some of the teachers and staff from the Westmoreland school district at the Steifvater Room on Varick Street in Utica.

These guys usually plan it right: wait until after the holidays so you are sure everyone can get together however one little wrinkle got in the way of planning this year… Something called the inauguration! Quite a few teachers/staff were chaperones on the districts trip to Washington D.C. to join the masses at Barack Obama’s ceremony so the party was down by 10-15 guests from years past.

The Steifvater Room was closed to the public from 6pm-10pm so this party crew had the full run of the place.  Food was catered by Roma’s (loved the sausage bread) and Georgios (riggies were amazing!).   After a couple hours of drinking, eating and chatting…the bar was split in two. On the bar side most of the guys watching TV, chatting with other guys and hanging out. On the other side were some tables, stools, pool tables and the dance floor that was packed by many of the ladies (as usually is the case… the guys come with the wives and form a men’s club while the girls get to have their fun lol)…

The general public started to come in around 10:15 and danced with the Bulldog party crew for part of the night.  We had so much fun I wound up playing an extra hour til 11….  By this time I was sooooo tired from playing 3 gigs in 29 hours that I thought my effect lights were playing games with my eyes!    This was the first time I played for this group and I look forward to working with them again in the future.

Spann/Gillespie Wedding Gig Log

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

What a weekend I had… 3 parties in 28 hours started on Friday, January 16th with the wedding of Shelly and Eric at Dibbles Inn in Vernon.  I made sure to wear my extra heavy jacket and gloves as it was a very cold night for a load in and loud out.  I actually used two sound systems for this party: the Fender Passport PA system (perfect for ceremonies) in the Gold Room and my regular Big Party sound systemand lights in the Silver Room where the reception was held.

I arrived at 5pm, the same time as the cake decorators (who unfortunately had a flat tire on the way to deliver and had to switch cars)  and Shelly, who got dressed and prepared for the wedding in the newly renovated upstairs at Dibbles.

The ceremony was short and beautiful as Eric and Shelly exchanged vows in a ceremony that started at 6:30 and was done by 6:45.  Nearly 130 people were at the ceremony and many more came to the reception. After the ceremony Shelly/Eric held their receiving line then went upstairs so guests could enjoy the wonderful cocktails and munchies. After everyone entered the Silver Room for the reception Shelly/Eric went back to the Gold Room to take pictures. (Photographer was Sue Donohue 315-942-5559).

What was great about this reception and most I have done recently is that it was different from the “norm”.  There were no formal introductions, just two toasts given by the best men before dinner. The first one was given by Eric’s friend Kevin. The second one was by Billy, pictured below after getting a little crazy and stepping on a table only to have it collapse on him.  Both speeches were quite funny and touched on good times the guys had together.  Look for the audio book out soon lol…

After an outstanding buffet dinner it was time for two special dances. The first one was Shelly/Eric’s dance which started with Amazed by Lonestar and mixed into These Are The Days by Keith Urban halfway.  At the mix of the songs Shelly’s children came out to dance followed by the bridal party.   Eric then danced with his mom Jane to a beautiful song I have only played once or twice in the past: A Song For My Son On His Wedding Day by Mikki Viereck.  After these two songs it was time to dance and party.  There was a cake cutting but it was done very low key after the first slow song for the night.

Musically we had the pleasure of mixing a variety of tunes during the night.  Eric and Shelly trusted our judgement on what to play for cocktail hour and during dinner and provided a great list for party tunes. We covered all the different genres: oldies, country, disco, 80’s, party rock and some of the new hits from today.  Shelly and Eric asked us not to play the Electric Slide, YMCA, Cha Cha Slide, Chicken Dance or Macarena, all songs I normally do not play unless you specifically ask for them when we go over the music for your wedding.   (They are the most common DO NOT PLAYS I receive).

After a great reception a shuttle bus took the party went back to the hotel at Vernon Downs, where guests hung out at the bar and then crashed for the night…   Here is the music breakdown:

Wedding Ceremony Intro:  Canon In D Major
Recessional:  All You Need Is Love by The Beatles

First Dance:  Amazed by Lonestar to These Are The Days by Keith Urban
Mother/Son: Song For My Son On His Wedding Day by Mikki Viereck
Last Song Of Night: It’s Your Love by Faith Hill/Tim McGraw
